My main career for over thirty years has been as a computer programmer and software engineer. I am currently available to work part time on small projects, so please get in touch to discuss any programming or website design jobs you may have.

My work has mainly been using languages such as Microsoft Visual Basic, VB.net, and VBA in Excel, but I also have experience using C, C++, C# and various other programming languages.

I am also familiar with standard website development tools and languages, html, css, JavaScript, php. I have also worked a lot with databases, am proficient in database design using Sql, and have experience using a number of database systems such as Oracle, MySQL, Microsoft Access, Sql Server, etc.

I am currently working part time as a Software and IT manager for Lacerta Technology Ltd who design and manufacture scientific instruments for use in research and industry, specifically thermal analysis for study of the physical properties of polymers. I have also recently worked on fixing some problems, and adding some new features, for the accounts department in a small manufacturing company who have some software for collating data from their databases into Excel which was written a number of years ago by someone no longer with the company.

Microsoft Visual Basic

I first worked with Visual Basic on a project for Transco with Keane. This was probably VB5. I later worked extensively with VB6 at Triton Technology and Lacerta Technology.

Visual Basic .Net

When Triton Technology developed the new identiPol QA instrument we took the opportunity to move to the latest software development environment for Microsoft Windows which was .NET. As we already had a lot of software written in VB6 I decided to implement the new software in Vb.Net.

VBA is a version of Visual Basic embedded in Microsoft's Office suite of programs. I have worked mainly with VBA in Excel.

Microsoft Excel

I have used Microsoft Excel for many years, both as a general purpose spreadsheet, and for the analysis and prentation of scientific data. I also have experience developing applications using VBA in Excel.

C programming language

My first encounter with the C programming language was when I was working at Polymer Laboratories.

C++ programming language

I worked programming in C++ at Polymer Laboratories when they were taken over by Rheometrics Scientific and I continued working in C++ at my next job at Consort Securities.

C# programming language

I have done some work programming in C# at Triton Technology Ltd. and then Lacerta Technology Ltd..

HTML or Hypertext Markup Language is the standard language that is used to define the content of web pages on the internet. I have been using HTML to design and build websites for many years. Nowadays most websites also require knowledge of CSS, Javascript and MySql.

Cascading Style Sheets

HTML is the standard language that is used to define the content of web pages on the internet and CSS is now the standard way of defining how a browser should present that content for the user.

Javascript is the standard client-side scripting language used in website design. Javascript code runs within the browser on your pc or device when you view a website, and allows changes to be made dynamically, e.g. for animations or changes to what is displayed based upon user's settings such as screen sizes, etc.

PHP is a server-side scripting language that allows a website to be produced dynamically, i.e. in response to user input, or data held in a database, etc. The PHP program basically determines the HTML code that is output.

Structured Query Language

I have a good working knowledge of SQL and have worked with Oracle, SQL Server, Access/Jet and MySQL databases.

Oracle Databases

I worked with Oracle databases at Parallax and Keane and have developed a good working knowledge of database programming and relational database design.

MySQL is the database system commonly used to store data used by website servers. It is a free to use system and is easily interfaced with the common Apache web server system. It is therefore much more common for use in general purpose website design and development, but still has the power and complexity if necessary that larger database system such as SQL Server and Oracle can provide.

Access / Jet database

I worked programming for an Access/Jet database at Consort Securities Systems which used a database to store data imported from the stock exchange's Crest system. Here I developed a good working knowledge of SQL and relational database concepts.

Lacerta Technology Ltd.

Lacerta Technology Ltd. design and manufacturer scientific instruments, in particular devices to aid in the measurement and characterisation of polymers using thermal analysis and related techniques. The company was formed out of what remained when the previous company Triton Technology Ltd. was sold to Mettler Toledo.

I worked at Parallax Solutions Ltd. in Coventry from 1998 to 2001 working mainly in Centura Team Developer (Gupta SQL Windows) and Oracle.

Consort Securities Systems Ltd.

I worked at Consort Securities Systems Limited from 1995 to 1998.

Polymer Laboratories Ltd

I worked for Polymer Laboratories in Loughborough from around 1988 to 1995. Initially as a computer programmer and latterly as software manager in charge of the department.
