HTML or Hypertext Markup Language is the standard language that is used to define the content of web pages on the internet. I have been using HTML to design and build websites for many years. Nowadays most websites also require knowledge of CSS, Javascript and MySql.

I first taught myself the basics of HTML when I was working at Polymer Laboratories so would have been early/mid 1990s. I learned more about website development, and produced my own very basic website when I was working for Parallax Solutions where they encouraged staff to learn new technologies.

I used to work on the website for Triton Technology Ltd. for a while until it was decided my time was better spent on other programming work. Since then I have mostly produced websites for my own personal projects, and various groups that I am involved with such as morris dance groups, my band, folk club, etc. I never seem to have as much time as I would like to work on these websites, so I am rarely satisfied that they are as good as they could be.

As I am now only part time at Lacerta I also work producing websites for other people, so please get in touch if you need a new website.

I am currently working part-time from home as a website developer mostly on small one-off projects. I am proficient in the basic website development tools and systems, html, css, javascript, php and mysql.

Cascading Style Sheets

HTML is the standard language that is used to define the content of web pages on the internet and CSS is now the standard way of defining how a browser should present that content for the user.

Javascript is the standard client-side scripting language used in website design. Javascript code runs within the browser on your pc or device when you view a website, and allows changes to be made dynamically, e.g. for animations or changes to what is displayed based upon user's settings such as screen sizes, etc.

MySQL is the database system commonly used to store data used by website servers. It is a free to use system and is easily interfaced with the common Apache web server system. It is therefore much more common for use in general purpose website design and development, but still has the power and complexity if necessary that larger database system such as SQL Server and Oracle can provide.

Polymer Laboratories Ltd

I worked for Polymer Laboratories in Loughborough from around 1988 to 1995. Initially as a computer programmer and latterly as software manager in charge of the department.

Parallax Solutions Ltd.

I worked at Parallax Solutions Ltd. in Coventry from 1998 to 2001 working mainly in Centura Team Developer (Gupta SQL Windows) and Oracle.

Triton Technology Ltd.

I worked for Triton Technology Ltd. as software and IT manager for many years and continued to work for Lacerta Technology Ltd. which was formed from what remained after the company was sold to Mettler Toledo.

Everards Brewery Anstey Morrismen meet for practice on a Wednesday evening every week from October until around the end of April (except over Christmas) at The Church Rooms in Anstey. 8-10pm then afterwards entire to The Old Hare and Hounds. Over the summer we dance out at a different pub every Wednesday, and also visit the occasional dance weekend, festivals and other events.

The Bang On The Wall Band

The Bang On The Wall Band is a barn dance and ceilidh band based in the East Midlands. Martin Wildig and I formed the band in 1997 after the previous band (The ACME Dance Company) that we both played in folded. The band works with a number of different dance callers. Our main regular caller for many years was Laz Gilbert, but nowadays I usually call the dances myself.

Poppy Folk Club

The Poppy Folk Club meets once a month at the Poppy and Pint in the Lady Bay Area of West Bridgford, Nottingham. We have a nice big room upstairs at the pub. Generally we alternate each month between a songs and music session and a concert night where we have a guest artist to perform, followed by a singaround for anyone wanting to stay afterwards to sing or play.

Lacerta Technology Ltd.

Lacerta Technology Ltd. design and manufacturer scientific instruments, in particular devices to aid in the measurement and characterisation of polymers using thermal analysis and related techniques. The company was formed out of what remained when the previous company Triton Technology Ltd. was sold to Mettler Toledo.
