In order to join The Morris Dancer's Webring you must be the webmaster for a site (or at least one web page) that has something to do with morris dancing. Most of the sites within the webring are maintained by individual morris sides, but if you have a personal page about morris dancing, historical information, dance notes, or any other site relating to morris dancing, you are eligible to join The Morris Dancer's Webring.

Note that you have to be the webmaster for the site. If you do not have the ability to update the site you will need to have the webmaster for that site sign-up. This is because, to join The Morris Dancer's Webring you have to include some code in the page in order to display the Webring Navigation Banner. The navigation banner displays the Morris Dancer's Webring logo, and a number of links allowing people to navigate around the ring of member sites. Full instructions for how to add the code to your site are given below.

In 2000 Yahoo took over Webring, and they required that people sign-up for a Yahoo ID before you could join a webring. Now that Yahoo are in the process of getting rid of Webring, it is no longer necessary to have a Yahoo ID, but you will need a Webring ID. However don't worry, when you apply to join Webring, full instructions are given on how to create your Webring ID. If you already belong to another Webring you should already have a Webring ID. You can use the same Webring ID for The Morris Dancer's Webring.

When you apply to join the webring you will need to add some code to your page in order for it to display the navigation banner. There are two versions of the navigation banner that you can use. There is the version introduced by Yahoo called the 'NavBar' or my own version. If you are a web-wizard you are also free to customise the banner as you wish, for example to better fit in with the colour scheme of your own site.

Here is my version of the Navigation banner, and is the one that most of the sites in The Morris Dancer's Webring are using:

The Yahoo! NavBar

Here is the Yahoo! version of the Navigation banner:
*** TODO Add Yahoo NavBar here ***

The advantage of the Yahoo! style NavBar is that if you already belong to one or more other webrings, your NavBar for The Morris Dancer's Webring will show up automatically (provided you use the same Webring-ID and add the NavBar to the same URL). Also if I ever decide to alter how the NavBar is displayed, or if Webring decide to change how all NavBars display, these changes will happen automatically, without you having to do anything.

The disadvantage with the Yahoo! NavBar, is that there is very little that I can do to customise the NavBar to make it look different from other Webrings, and it is therefore a bit boring. Another disadvantage of the NavBar is that is requires JavaScript. This means that it won't show up for certain people who may be visiting your site. This only affects a small number of people, mainly those who are still using a very old version of the web browser, or who use a specialised browser (e.g. those designed to convert text automatically to speech for blind people). The NavBar can also sometimes be slow to display as it has to go to the Webring server to get the code every time someone visits your page.

Adding the navigation banner code to your site

Whether you decide to use my version of the webring banner or the NavBar, you will need to alter the HTML code for your web page. The easiest way to do this is to use a simple text editor (such as Notepad which comes with Windows) to edit the copy of you page on your own PC. You can then upload the page with the changes (using FTP or whatever program your website host provides). To add the banner at the bottom of the page insert the code just before the tag </BODY> which appears near the end of the file.

If you prefer to use some other web-page authoring tool it will be more difficult. As there are so many different programs out there I cannot possibly give detailed instructions for all of them. However the program should have a facility to allow you to insert raw HTML code into your page. If you have any problems adding the code please get in touch, and I will do my best to assist.

To get the code to insert use the following link (note you will need to know your site ID number):
