Barn Dance and Ceilidh Calling

I usually play in the band for barn dances and ceilids, or am up there dancing, but recently I have also started having a go at calling the dances myself. I have seen many excellent callers in action and a few slightly dodgy ones too. I started off calling some of the dances for a couple of ceilidhs organised by Sergeant Musgraves Dance. We have two other callers who both dance with the side, so we each called a few dances each. My first go at doing a full dance event was for the Poppy Folk Club where we put a scratch band together with regular musicians from the club. This was a great success and has encouraged me to have a go at calling more often. I called for The Bang On The Wall Band for a Church barn dance in Kirkby-in-Ashfield when our regular caller wan't available, and am looking forward to doing more of these in the future, and perhaps work with some other bands too.

I love the English Ceilidh scene and barn dances, but I am also interested in Scottish ceilidh dances having attended a number of ceilidhs on the West Coast where Julie's sister and her family live. I also try and get when I can to the Nottingham Ceilidh club run by Shuggie Douggie.
